The weird feature I've experienced the whole time I've owned an iPhone 6, where the icons will slide down the screen halfway ... is an actual feature of the phone, made to make the top row of buttons easier to reach (presumably when using the phone one-handed with the thumb as the touching element.  This feature is, rather unimaginatively, called "Reachability".
