Arsenic can be selectively eliminated with hybrid anion ion exchange (HAIX) with Hydrated Fe(III) nanoparticles (HAIX-NanoHFO) because the charged species of arsenic is present as an oxyacid with an otherwise net negative charge. So while we are primarily interested in the removal of cation (AsIII or AsV) because its exists naturally as a non-full disassociated species. we can selectively adsorb toxic arsenic metal but not otherwise hurt the balance of the water (hardness, TDS, sodium levels, pH). The Donnan membrane principle makes this selective separation possible.
