Today I Learned . . . (2012-06-12)

Today I Learned . . .

1.  An artesian well occurs when water enters a porous geologic structure (like sand, gravel, sandstone, limestone) that is trapped between two layers of an impermeable geologic structure (like a clay or shale).  Water enters the porous geology at a higher elevation.  It flows downward, and at a lower elevation, can not escape do to the impermeable layers that trap it.  If a well is drilled into this porous geologic structure, the gravity pressure can be sufficient for the water to erupt from the ground without mechanical pumping.
