Today I Learned . . .

1.  You have to add the acid to water when making a dilute acid solution because the heat of reaction would otherwise make the solution spatter.

2.  The term "proof" as it refers to alcohol comes from earlier times when there was no clear method of quality control for alcohol production.  To establish it was strong enough, the alcohol would be poured on gunpowder and lit.  If it was strong enough the gunpowder would ignite giving "proof" it was strong enough.
