Today I Learned . . .

1.  One of the first effective forms of treatment for syphilis was to intentionally give people malaria, with the resulting high fever killing the syphilis bacteria.  The patient could then be given quinine for the malaria.  It remained in use as a treatment until the advent of penicillin.
